Tutorial (pdf) here
Features:
- Acts both as a yarn swift and skeiner
- Holds up to a 2-yard skein
- Collapsible so it can be stored flat
- Has optional yarn guide to make winding on easier
- Cost roughly ~$10 of supplies from a home improvement store (plus some tools)
I tried to be real thorough about where all the parts go and to give detailed pictures and directions. Please let me know if you use it and find any mistakes or confusions. I would love to improve them. Send me an email at bdeitrick AT gmail DOT com (replace AT and DOT, obviously).
Also, if you build one of your own, let me know. I would love to see what yours look like!

I’m so super sad. This is totally not your fault, but I thought I’d post it as a warning to anyone whos never made anything with pvc and might make the same mistake I did.
When I went to get the PVC, there was longer pieces that were WHITE, and shorter pieces that were BEIGE. They both were labeled 1/2″ and 3/4″. My car is small, so I got the beige ones so they’d fit.
I got all the connecting pieces, some in white and some in beige, because some of them they only had in white (like the x join)
Come to find out, the pvc didn’t fit in my caps or x joins. The white PVC is a bigger circumference than the beige, and they don’t even MAKE x joins for the beige kind (It’s called CPVC rather than schedule 40 pvc) So now I have a big ol’ bag of hacked up pvc and some caps/x joins with drill holes in them that I can’t return.

I just wanted to say THANKS for the great, thorough tutorial. My wife built me one of these for my birthday and it is awesome!
