Ever since spring break ended, my knitting progress has slowed dramatically. My shrug hasn’t progressed any, although I did cast on and start the 2nd Fetching (and I’m pretty close to done too with only one night of knitting).
I did get some pattern organization done though – I keep a “stash” of patterns that I come across on my computer as PDFs. When I was going through each of them, my dear hubby saw Yorick and decided it was the coolest thing ever. I went and bought some Patons Classic Merino for it the next day in Aran. I wanted to do pure white at first, but heard that white wool doesn’t felt sometimes so I went with the more natural color (also, someone on Craftster Forum said that they had experience felting it, so I felt safe enough).
Today, I finally sat down and knitted a swatch. Well, it’s not a full swatch (I never have enough patience to do that), but I did knit the full 4″ across and 2″ up. Actually, it turned out wider (4.75″x2.5″) because my gauge was pretty off from the pattern, but I knew that Patons Classic Merino felts to about 75% original size, whereas the pattern yarn only felted to about 90% size, so I went ahead and felted the swatch as it was. Post-felting, it turned out to be about the same size.
Look at my swatch! I’m not a big swatcher, so I’m definitely proud of my accomplishment. Usually, I just rip it back apart and reuse the yarn.

My only concern is that the Classic Elite Lush used in the pattern seems to be pretty thin and soft even after felting, and Patons Merino is definitely a little thick (like bag-material kind of thick). We’ll just have to see how it turns out. It’s still soft though.
I’m going to get started on this pattern tomorrow on my way out of town for a little overnight trip. What a way to make time pass!
